In 2020, Yellow Earth launched the Writers Academy, a new initiative to increase the number of British East/Southeast Asian* writers across the UK. The Manchester course was geared to those living in the North West.

From 25 April until 31 October, students met online on the last Saturday of every month, developing their writing skills for live performance and creating a short piece of writing. In addition, there have been monthly Watch Parties, where the participants watch a theatre piece online and then have a video chat to discuss what they have seen.

Meet the tutor: Naomi Sumner

Hello. I’m Naomi, a Manchester based playwright and dramaturg fuelled by salt and vinegar crisps and cups of tea. My work has been performed at theatres across the North of England and in London including York Theatre Royal, CAST, Oldham Coliseum, Arcola Theatre and Theatre 503. My play SAME SAME DIFFERENT was commissioned by Eclipse Theatre and toured to venues across the North of England in 2019.

I lead new writing company Brush Stroke Order and have recently been commissioned by Chinese Arts Now and HOME to create the digital project Wait I’m from Wuhan.

Yellow Earth Academy: Manchester is delivered by Yellow Earth Theatre in partnership with: Contact, HOME, Manchester International Festival (MIF) Royal Exchange Theatre, Sustained Theatre Up North (STUN) and The Lowry
