We, like so many other arts organisations and artists, are thrilled and relieved that the months of campaigning and lobbying has resulted in a significant financial package from the government to support the arts industry through COVID-19. We thank everyone who played a part in this at every level, and welcome more details on how this funding will be put into practice.
This lockdown period has highlighted the unique ecology that is the theatre sector: buildings, artists, companies, touring, non-touring, youth theatres, communities, multiple disciplines, multiple regions.
It has also exposed the precarious position of those working in our industry and those most likely to leave, namely: people of colour, those with disabilities and early career artists, all of whom are vital to retain if theatre is to be inclusive and relevant for everyone. As a touring theatre company, we depend on our British East Asian community of freelance artists and our community projects as much as our venue partners in which we perform. A fair and speedy distribution of funding that acknowledges this will be vital in safeguarding the future of a healthy theatre fit for the 21st century.
